While a ‘major project’ request for an A I data center proposal in Wesley Vale remains before the planning minister, Firmus technologies second project at the site has been approved.
An application for a Research and Development facility at the former pulp mill site passing Latrobe Council without a vote due to the nature of the states planning scheme, which also didn’t require the 26-megawatt operation slated for the former pulp mill to be publicly advertised.
Firmus says the R&D facility will be equipped with computing hardware that hosts AI workloads for customers and is designed to support a research program focused on reducing the reliance on conventional sources of backup power like diesel generators.
The facility is expected to create approximately 70 jobs during construction and roughly 20 permanent jobs for ongoing operations.
