Police have charged a 26-year-old Moonah man after he was allegedly detected travelling at more than double the speed limit on the Huon Highway at Grove on Monday evening.
Officers allegedly intercepted the unregistered vehicle shortly after it was detected travelling at 141km/h in a 60km/h zone at dusk.
Constable Smart said he heard the vehicle approaching before he saw it.
“I had only just set up when I heard the vehicle approaching at high speed,” Constable Smart said.
“The road noise from the tyres indicated that it was travelling at an extreme speed, but I was still shocked and appalled when it was detected at 141 km/h.
“There was other traffic on the road, and, at that time of the evening, wildlife is also active in rural areas. This driver was placing himself and every other road user at significant risk.”
The driver was arrested and charged with a high-speed driving offences and is expected to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court in February.
The vehicle, which belongs to the man’s employer, was seized for three months.
