State Department considering critical habitat classification for Macquarie Harbour

The status of Macquarie Harbour is being considered by the state’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

Internal government documents released through an RTI, have revealed a push from the Scientific Advisory Commitee for the location to be designated a CRITICAL habitat for the endangered Maugean Skate.

The change would mean management plans would need to be developed with the salmon industry for the purpose of protecting the species.
