Nostalgia is a powerful force, and there is nothing quite like firing up a game that defined your childhood. If you spent your youth glued to a chunky computer monitor, EA has just delivered a massive blast from the past. In a surprise launch, the company has released 25 iconic classic PC games on Steam.
The lineup includes brand new Anniversary Editions of the motorcycle combat legend Road Rash and six titles from the epic space franchise Wing Commander. For fans of historic PC gaming, this is a very big deal. Alongside the Anniversary Editions, EA has also opened the vault to bring 18 other retro titles to Steam for the very first time. Games like Theme Hospital, the Crusader series, and a huge collection of the legendary Ultima role-playing games.
How Lost Tapes Saved Over 1,500 Cinematic Scenes
What makes this release truly special is the effort that went into the Anniversary Editions. These are not just quick, lazy ports. The restoration team actually uncovered a physical media vault filled with thousands of old Betacam, VHS, and D1 tapes.
This incredible discovery allowed them to recover the original master files for the Full Motion Video (FMV) sequences that defined games like Wing Commander. Through a careful digitisation process, the developers managed to restore over 1,500 cinematic scenes. They preserved the original look and creative vision of the games while updating them to run smoothly on modern systems.
You get all the retro charm without the headache of trying to make a 30-year-old game work on a new PC.
The return of the Wing Commander series is especially notable because of how it happened. EA worked directly with the dedicated modding community, taking the time to incorporate fan-made mods into these official releases. This reflects a growing commitment to renewing influential titles for longtime fans while helping entirely new audiences discover the foundations of PC gaming.
As a fantastic bonus for long-time supporters, anyone who already owns a digital copy of the Wing Commander games on GOG or the EA App will automatically receive the new Anniversary Edition upgrades entirely for free on those platforms.
