Dog park to prevent bird deaths

A North West council is looking at building a dog park to prevent further attacks on Little Penguin colonies.

More than 40 penguins were found dead at Doctors Rocks last month, forcing the government to propose harsher penalties for owners whose dogs kill native wildlife.

The latest attack has brought the total number of birds killed this year to more than 170.

Now, the Waratah-Wynyard Council is hoping to establish a dog park, after the Parks and Wildlife Service said it wants to ban dogs from more coastal areas.

The Service has put forward a request to council that the current prohibited dog area be extended to Burntwood Point.

The council says a new dog park and its location are currently being considered.
