A kayaker who went missing off Maria Island on Monday afternoon has turned up safe and well.
Hobart man Steve Smith paddled out from Darlington yesterday morning, but his family raised the alarm after he failed to return as expected in the afternoon.
A large-scale air and sea search effort on the Mercury passage yielded no clues yesterday.
But it was a much better result for searchers on Tuesday morning: marine police on board the PV Resolute found him unharmed on Ile Du Nord off Maria's northern tip.
Mr Smith has been ferried back to Darlington jetty where he's been reunited with his very happy family.
“The man had stopped on the island about 12 noon yesterday for a short break, however, the strengthening breeze took the kayak out and it was too deep for him to retrieve it safely,” Senior Constable Chris Williams said.
“The man was wearing a wetsuit, warm clothing and a PFD, and he’d told people where he was going and what time to expect him back – so he did all the right things which enabled his safe return.”
