Tas health probe

An Upper House inquiry into Tasmania's health services has been told of a culture of hospital management trying to conceal negative publicity.

In his appearance, a doctor has described an atmosphere of blame and bullying of staff, also claiming medicos have been instructed not to contribute to the inquiry.

More examples of long waits for accessing hospital treatment have been raised, as well.

Submissions to the parliamentary inquiry are also believed to have included a damning assessment of mental health services in the state.

Today, Health Minister Michael Ferguson is eager to spread the news that 8 more beds are opening at the Royal Hobart Hospital next week.

"That means support for the Emergency Department which we accept has been very busy, not just during the influenza season, but during the year of increased demand, so progress is genuinely occurring."
