Eight people have been taken to hospital after a two vehicle crash in the state's north.

Tasmania Police, ambulance and fire crews were called to Lilydale Rd, two kilometres from Rocherlea at 2.45pm yesterday afternoon.

A provisional 2 driver was travelling in a blue Toyota Corolla when it collided with a silver Mitsubishi Outlander.

The Hobart woman was trapped in her car for a short time, being freed by TFS.

The occupants of a silver Mitsubishi outlander, a female driver, male front-seat passenger and five children from the North-East were not trapped but sustained minor physical injuries.

All eight people were taken to Launceston General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Initial investigations have found driver inexperience and excessive speed for the conditions contributed to the crash.

Sergeant Sheree Smith is reminding drivers of the "fatal five."

"Speeding, distraction, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, fatigue or failure to wear seatbelts are factors that feature frequently in serious casualty crashes," Sergeant Smith said.

“It was fortunate that all occupants of the vehicles, in particular the children, were all correctly restrained which undoubtably prevented a considerably worse outcome.”

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash cam footage is being urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or report online.
