Wildlife authorities in Tasmania have expanded their investigation into a video showing a bloodied wombat and a man gloating about punching it.
The state's wildlife department on Friday revealed two men were assisting with inquiries into the short clip, in which the native marsupial can be seen lodged motionless on the front of a blood-splattered 4WD.
In the footage, posted to Snapchat, a man can be heard yelling "I've just punched the f*** out of the wombat. You weak c***".
The video surfaced earlier this week, with Tasmania's Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment on Tuesday confirming they were speaking to a young man about it.
The footage, reportedly shot in Tasmania's south, comes a month after police in South Australia investigated video of an off-duty police officer stoning a wombat.
The maximum jail term for animal cruelty in Tasmania is up to five years, with fines as much as $33,600.
