Thousands without power after severe winds

Weather related power outages have hit the North West and West Coasts on Tuesday morning.

More than 1800 residences and businesses in the region are without power, including more than 700 TasNetworks customers on the West Coast, with outages at Rosebery, Zeehan, Strahan and Queenstown

Port Sorell and Sassafras are the hardest hit on the North-West Coast with almost 500 outages combined.

Other centres affected include Gunns Plains, Preston, East Devonport, Railton, Latrobe, Sassafras, Calder and Yolla.

TasNetworks says around half the outages have been caused by power lines being brought down in strong winds, while the remainder are still under investigation.

TasNetworks staff have temporarily suspended industrial action for higher wages to limit power restoration delays during the severe weather spell.

CEO Sean McGoldrick is assuring affected customers TasNetworks workers are out in force.

In the meantime, TasNetworks has made an increased wages offer for employees.
