More than 1.2 million used drink containers have been deposited in return for 10 cents as part of Recycle Rewards, meaning $120,000 has been paid out so far.

Environment Minister Madeleine Ogilvie says 39% of refunds and donations have been made via the Recycle Rewards app, with the most popular container types deposited being aluminium, followed by plastic, and glass.

People also have the option of donating the 10 cent refund to a local charity or not-for-profit group as one of 120 official donation partners with the scheme, withy the Burnie Men’s Shed in the top three recipients statewide so far.

More than 206,000 containers have been deposited on the North-West Coast since the scheme launched late last week.

There are currently 40 refund points across Tasmania, and a further nine will be installed by the end of August.

Eligible containers can be left at Recycle Rewards depots on the North-West Coast at Spreyton and Somerset, with reverse vending machines at Sheffield, Smithton, Devonport and Wynyard, with two also on the West Coast at Queenstown and Zeehan.
