The Prime Minister has filled in the missing piece of Tasmania achieving its own AFL team with $240 million of funding for Macquarie Point, providing for a waterfront stadium.

This is in addition to $65 million announced yesterday for the upgrade of UTAS stadium in Launceston.

The Prime Minister also signalled an urban renewal project for Macquarie Point with housing for essential healthcare workers, job opportunities and transport solutions.

“The $240 million that we have for this project that will see here a stadium that will see housing, private investment, importantly the port facilities so that we can have greater access to the Antarctic from here.”

Premier Rockliff has revelled in the historic occasion, ushering in a transformation of the site, and fulfilling the dream of a Tassie team.

“I’m very proud to be the Premier that in lockstep with the Prime Minister being able to finally get things done and get it done for not only southern Tasmania but all Tasmanians that can be truly proud of what this precinct will be.”

Independent MP Andrew Wilkie, who’s been a critic because he sees extra funding for health and housing as more important, has dubbed the Macquarie Point Stadium as unconscionable, unnecessary, extravagant and unpopular.
