Salmon Tasmania is spruiking the value of the industry to the North-West and West Coasts with new data showing the industry in Macquarie Harbour directly supports almost 400 jobs across the Braddon Electorate.

The data has been gathered by Deloitte across employment by Tassal, Huon Aquaculture and Devonport-based Petuna Seafoods.

Salmon Tasmania CEO Luke Martin says many of the industry’s employees are drive-in drive-out shift workers commuting from Burnie, Devonport and other Coastal towns.

Mr Martin says the industry is invested in taking care of the environment , including ensuring bio-diversity and protection of the endangered maugean skate.

He says Macquarie Harbour is a complex marine environment with hydro inflows, historic mining sediment as well as aquaculture and there’s no evidence to support taking a political quick-fix where salmon is blamed to help save the skate.

Mr Martin says shutting down the industry in Macquarie Harbour without such evidence would negatively impact on hundreds of West Coast and North-West families and businesses
