Happy Death Day is a fast paced action packed dark comedy/drama/horror and its sequel Happy Death Day 2U brings a fresh, new story even though some is familiar. Even though the original plot is recapped in this installment, make sure you watch the first film before this one.
The film begins where the other left off but this time main character, Tree (Jessica Rothe) wakes up to realise that her boyfriend’s college roommate has been working on a time travel science experiment project. Tree becomes stuck in a parallel universe trying to stop her killer again, except this time everything and everyone is slightly different.
Like the first movie, this film spins off the ideas of films such as Groundhog Day, Scream and the Back to the Future Trilogy. It’s a teen slasher full of twists and turns and hilarious outbursts from the characters throughout various moments.
The vibrant script is accompanied by the main character’s costume that is brought back from the original movie. Her boyfriend’s t-shirt and her night before smudged eyeliner returns to the screen and even the script makes reference to her costume and she changes her outfits a number of times as she re-lives the same day over and over again.
You must stay for the end-credits of this movie as it leaves an opening for the story to continue but also wraps up the sequel with a round of applause from the audience as you don’t expect the outcome. Not sure if there should be a third movie (in this universe anyway). Although, I have to admit, I’m definitely hooked on the plots.
Stars Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard and Rachel Matthews.
