Retail Looking Up

Another interest rate cut looks unlikely this month - after better-than-expected retail figures.

Government handouts and rate cuts are being credited after trade for Australia as a whole rose half a per cent in trend terms in June - and there are signs Tasmania's 8-month slump is easing off, almost steady at minus point 1 per cent.

The state opposition says it's a worry given Tasmania was awash with carbon tax compensation - but Proprieter of Les Lees in Hobart Edward Harry says morale's improving.
