| Poppy Imports Approved |
|
The Tasmanian government is assuring poppy growers their crops will not be compromised, after giving a major producer the go ahead to import from overseas. Cressy-based TPI Enterprises claims unfavourable conditions over the last two seasons left them without enough raw material, prompting them to source poppy straw pellets from Turkey. Other growers raised concerns about possible biosecurity fears - but in approving the application today - Deputy Premier Bryan Green says it's a one-off licence for 2013 only and will first need to pass strict quarantine measures. Once through, TPI will be able to fulfil their contracts. The company plans to take on an extra 12 workers when an upgrade of their plant is complete. |
